Follow our guide to make the most of your organisation's industry visit.

Before the visit

Make contact with the school or teacher to establish logistics, expectations and requirements:

  • Who is the main contact in case of an emergency at the workplace?
  • How long is the tour scheduled for? If the visit is for a full day, you will need to consider breaks and lunch.
  • How many students will be attending your workplace?

Discuss with the school/Opportunities Doncaster:

  • Where to park/which entrance they are to use.
  • Where you will meet them.
  • What safety requirements students and adults on the tour will have to follow.
  • What students and teachers should wear (are your facilities cold/hot?)
  • What else to bring (lunch, water, etc.)

Ensure your workplace is prepared:

  • Consider the number of staff you will need to supervise the students.
  • Allocate a dedicated space where students can leave their personal belongings for the duration of the visit.
During the visit


Welcome the students:

  • Introduce the business and your service.
  • Give the students a tour of the building and premises (don't forget any safety gear).

  • Allow the opportunity for students to ask questions.

During their visit, students may ask you:

  • What was your pathway into the job?

  • What educational skills would be needed to work in your position?
  • What does a typical day include for you?
  • How much do you work alone and as part of a team?
  • What do you like most about your job?
After the visit


Be sure to collect feedback from the school to find out the students' thoughts about the visit.

Tips for businesses:

  • Make it educational and plan the visit around as many aspects of the organisation as possible.
  • Structure the tour in a way that allows students to be in small groups.
